Misleading Marketing

by Dean Kreutzer
Reading food labels has become more challenging as companies vie for market share by injecting marketing into what should be straight forward labeling. When Kraft came out with their Calorie-Wise salad dressing line years ago, it was a great brand and it wasn't misleading since all that was being promoted was the fact that the salad dressing was lower in calories than the regular version. Now, things are different

Into the Hands of Consumers

by Dean Kreutzer, Over the Hill Orchards
What does Environment Canada say for this Saturday night? A low of -1C. While many people complain about how cold they are or how they miss the sunshine, apricot flowers will die if they hit -5C, and newly formed fruit at -1C for only a few minutes. A few minutes and the whole year's worth of the income that I depend on to sustain my family, will be gone. Imagine if you would not get paid for an entire year because of one night's cold temperature! It puts things into perspective, doesn't it? I have covered my apricot trees six times so far this year.

The Simplicity of Food

by Dean Kreutzer
People are often intimidated by the thought of switching to eating organically; either it's the additional money that is typically required or it's not convenient to make the meals, or the concept is just too big a change to know where to start! Making a lifestyle change doesn't necessarily mean that it all has to happen at once, it can be gradual steps. This month I will give an example of how to start to make a simple, nutritional, and affordable organic food choice.

Science In Food

by Dean Kreutzer

In the mid 90's the USDA approved GM squash that was resistant to three viral diseases that were causing poor productivity in conventional squash varieties. The GM squash proved to have superior viral resistance, but the plant was in turn attractive to a certain insect that carried a bacterial disease which completely killed the plant. So instead of having squash that had low yields, they created squash that had no yields.

Comparing Apples to Apples (or Organic to Non-Organic)

by Dean Kreutzer

I find it very interesting how we in society place great importance on quality in the purchase of certain items. We want a good quality house and car, but place relatively little importance on the quality of the food we eat. Is it is a prestige thing to have that beautiful home, and food isn't prestigious, or is it because we consume food everyday, it just becomes boring? Just imagine if we purchased food once every five years, just like we do a vehicle.

The Extreme Side of "Safe" Food

by Dean Kreutzer
I had to ask: what was unsafe about scooping out ice cream and pouring cherry sauce at the market? I was told that it was unsanitary because of possible dust particles or insects that could get on the product. For the life of me, I tried to fathom how having a triple sink behind me would prevent dust particles from getting on the ice cream! I never knew the human race was under such threat from eating outdoors!
